Accessories worth buying and ones to skip

An honest sort through the accessories that change how you fly and the ones that sit in a drawer.

An assortment of drone accessories on a table

The accessory market for drones is large and mostly unnecessary. A handful of items genuinely change how you fly; the rest are bought once and used twice.

Buy these first

Extra batteries. Nothing else changes the experience as much. One battery is not a hobby, it is a demonstration.

ND filters. Inexpensive and they visibly change the look of video, which almost nothing else at that price does.

A fast memory card. Or two. The card that came in the box is often the minimum specification.

Spare propellers. A full set in the bag at all times.

A proper bag. Whatever form suits how you travel.

Controller sunshade. Judging exposure in bright sunlight is nearly impossible without one.

Landing pad. Cleaner take-offs, less dust ingestion, and a clear visual marker for others.

Fireproof battery bag. Cheap protection against a rare but severe failure.

A card reader. Offloading through the drone is slow and consumes aircraft battery, and a reader costs very little.

These eight cover almost everything. Most other purchases are refinements.

Buy these once you know you need them

Polarising filter. Excellent over water, awkward during rotating moves.

Multi-battery charging hub. A real convenience once you own several batteries.

Car charger. Valuable for long location days, unnecessary otherwise.

Power bank for the controller. Controller battery life is rarely the limit but occasionally is.

Extra controller cables. They fail, usually at the least convenient moment.

Larger capacity cards. Once you know your typical session size.

External monitor. Only if you frequently work with someone else present.

Portable weather meter. Useful if you routinely fly in marginal wind conditions.

Hearing protection is unnecessary. But high-visibility clothing genuinely helps when working near roads or the public.

Accessories that rarely earn their place

Propeller guards. Useful indoors and for absolute beginners, almost useless outdoors where they add weight and catch wind.

Landing gear extensions. Solve a problem that a landing pad solves better and lighter.

Decorative skins. No functional benefit and they can affect heat dissipation.

Range extenders. Legally and practically you should not be flying that far.

Parachute systems. Genuine equipment for specific professional operations, irrelevant for hobby flying.

Anti-collision lights. Necessary where regulations require them, decorative otherwise.

Aftermarket propellers. Rarely better and often worse than the originals.

Cheap variable ND filters. Colour casts and uneven darkening undo the benefit.

Phone mounts and grips of every kind. The controller already holds a phone, and additional hardware usually adds bulk without solving anything.

Gimbal replacement parts. Buying spares for a repair you are not qualified to perform.

Spending priorities by budget

Very limited budget. Two extra batteries and a fast memory card. Nothing else matters yet.

Modest additional budget. Add an ND filter set and a controller sunshade.

Comfortable budget. Add a proper bag, a landing pad and a charging hub.

Working towards paid work. Add a second drone before adding more accessories to the first.

Upgrading the drone versus accessorising. A well-equipped older drone usually beats a bare new one.

Software before hardware. Editing tools improve results more than most accessories do.

Training before equipment. Hours of practice cost nothing and improve footage more than any purchase.

Insurance before luxuries. Especially if flying near property or people.

Storage before extras. A drive to back up footage protects work already done, which is worth more than any new way of capturing more.

Resist the drip of small purchases. They accumulate into the price of a second battery set without delivering as much.

Judging an accessory before buying

Ask what problem it solves. If you cannot name a problem you have actually had, wait.

Ask how often that problem occurs. A rare annoyance rarely justifies a purchase.

Check compatibility precisely. Model variants differ, and generic fitment claims are often optimistic.

Check the weight. Anything mounted on the aircraft affects flight time and gimbal behaviour.

Read reviews from actual pilots. Rather than product listings and sponsored content.

Beware anything that blocks sensors. Accessories that obstruct obstacle sensors create a real hazard.

Prefer reversible additions. Anything requiring modification of the aircraft is a bigger decision.

Wait a month. The desire for most accessories fades.

Borrow one if you can. An afternoon with someone else's version answers the question better than any amount of reading about it.

Spend on flying instead. Travel to a good location produces better footage than any accessory.

Frequently asked questions

Which accessory makes the biggest difference?

Extra batteries. Nothing else changes the experience as much — with a single battery, drone flying is a demonstration rather than a hobby.

Are propeller guards worth buying?

Only for indoor flying or absolute beginners. Outdoors they add weight, catch wind and reduce flight time without providing meaningful protection.

Should I upgrade the drone or buy accessories?

A well-equipped older drone usually outperforms a bare new one, so batteries, filters and cards generally come before a body upgrade.

How can I judge whether an accessory is worth it?

Name the problem it solves and how often you have actually had it. Check weight, compatibility, and whether it obstructs any obstacle sensors.
